The Delaware Basin: Overview
The Delaware Basin is the western sub-basin of the greater Permian Basin, extending over 13,000 square miles from Eddy and Lea counties in New Mexico south through Reeves, Loving, Culberson, and Ward counties in West Texas. It is the deepest of the Permian sub-basins with the thickest deposits of sedimentary rock, and has become one of the most actively developed regions in the United States.
Horizontal drilling unlocked enormous production from the Delaware Basin, growing output from approximately 80,000 barrels per day in 2010 to over 2.1 million barrels per day a decade later. Primary targets are the organic-rich units within the Wolfcamp and Bone Spring groups, with the Second and Third Bone Spring Sands attracting particularly strong operator interest due to their high-quality reservoir characteristics. The basin’s northern end in New Mexico includes exposure to federal land with typically lower royalty rates, though a potash mining area complicates surface access in some locations.
